Pathé newsreel footage from the laying of the foundation stone at St James’s…

This ceremony took place in 1912 and involved local freemason, including Dr John Henry Salter, JP. The parish had only been founded in 1907 and this would have baked an important milestone in its development.

Fr Louis Butler, our first vicar, can be seen in the footage. The hardworking in raising money to build the church resulted in his untimely death. His grave is located in the churchyard about 3 foot from this very foundation stone. A reminder to us that the Church is truly built on the hardworking of the faithful.
